Simulation of a terrorist scenario (approx. 6 pages,
Objective of the assignment:
The objective is to get you to develop your historical imaginations and put yourself on both sides of an issue to see how the parties think and rationalize what they are doing a. To this end, pick a specific time and place that was characterized by terrorist violence and examine the perspectives of each side in the conflict. Any period and technology is acceptable as long as these rules are followed:
• The scenario must be real and based on historical research;
• The scenario must involve a conflict between a group using terrorist techniques and an entity seeking to thwart terrorist objectives;
• The time period falls roughly within the past 2000 years
• The sense of anachronism is preserved: all information and techniques used must reasonably have been available in the time and place selected.
You will be expected to use both primary and secondary sources in developing the material for your assignment. The assignments will be graded according to how well you have understood the situation and dynamics of a particular time and place and the constraints that operated on the use of terrorist or counter-terrorist tactics.
Part 1: Black Hat
Put yourself in the position of a terrorist leader in one of the historical periods studied in the course. Your task is to write the strategy for your group so that all of its members understand what you are fighting for, what tactics you intended to use, what your followers need to do, and what you hope to achieve.
The form of the document should reflect the way in which this kind of information would have been presented during the period of your choosing. In modern times, it might take the form of a political manifesto. In ancient times, it might have taken the form of an extended letter to followers (think of the letters of St. Paul in the New Testament). Pay attention to the way in which concepts are presented, the language used, and the kind of strategic objectives and tactics that are recommended. Your success will depend on the level of realism with which you are able to recreate your chosen scenario.
Part 2: White Hat
Now put yourself in the position of the entity that is the target of the terrorist attack as set out in Part 1. Again, stick closely to the historical period selected. Use only information that could reasonably been known at the time and document it from historical sources. Adopt the persona of a senior advisor who is explaining the strategy and tactics to be used in response to the threat. What are the strategic goals and what tactics will be used to achieve them?
The form of the document should reflect the way in which this kind of information would have been presented during the period of your choosing. In modern times, it might take the form of a briefing note , or a policy paper. In ancient times, it might have taken the form of a decree, letter or speech from the commander to those tasked with carrying out the strategy. Again, your success will depend on the level of realism with which you are able to recreate your chosen scenario.
